Hi Wayne,
Just wanted to express my appreciation for your website -- from across the world in Toronto, Canada.
I've only visited Staveley once, in 1992, but this is where the roots of my family lie. My grandfather, Arthur Shepherd, was born in Gowan Terrace in 1898. My great-grandfather, William Shepherd, lived with his ten siblings and parents, James Shepherd and Jane (Palmer) Shepherd on Main Street next to the Co-op. James was born in Staveley in 1849 and died in the Old Vicarage in 1932 after a lifetime of work in Chadwick's Bobbin Mill. Jane, in the 1860s, was a servant at the Eagle & Child Tavern.
My family's roots -- Shepherds, Palmers, Dickinsons, Nicholsons, etc. -- are firmly buried in Staveley and I'm very grateful for this website. It makes me feel closer to these ancestors, if that makes any sense!
Thanks again -- and best wishes for the website's success! Wayne Shepherd, Toronto, Canada |
