Hi my name is Veronica ST. Hilaire and my connection to Staveley is my third great grand-dad Robert Milburn was born in Staveley and had his baptism at the Staveley Chapel in May 1800. His Father was Thomas Milburn, I am still trying to trace information on Thomas to see if he was born in Staveley too but as yet not sure, Roberts brother Jonathan was also born and had his baptism in 1802. Finally managed to visit in April 2007. It is a lovely little village and the local people were very helpful to me and my two sisters when asking questions about the area and history. Unfortunately we could not find any graves with the name Milburn on (other than a William Milburn who we do not believe is related, known as Billy), we know that Robert went to live in Whitehaven where his wife came from and dead there but not sure what happened to his father Thomas or any of his other family!! Does anyone know if it was a mining village at any time as my family background seems to be miners - 1780 - 1940 ect. We hope to visit Staveley again in the near future and have a really good look around, did not have enough time on the first visit to stroll around and take it all in as had to spend time in Kendall Records Office searching for birth and death records. Look forward to going back to your lovely village. |
